Trend Alert: Cars Designed for Women

The Seat W: a car designed for women.

We believe that we will start to see cars designed for specific groups and in particular cars designed for women. A contest was held to “design a car for the modern woman.”

The winning car seems more stereotypical than modern however, assuming that women neither know nor care about cars. Here are some of the features: Access to fluids without opening the hood, a drawer in the back that holds the spare tire, and the worst detail is a flower design on the wheels. It’s no surprise that this “woman’s car” was actually designed by a man, Marcelo Aguiar from Lisbon. Listen, we applaud him for trying.

This idea of designing a car for women is one that I find really fascinating.  I think Volvo has been a trail-blazer in this arena.  Their 2004 YCC concept, designed by and specifically for women, was, I think, a better attempt than Marcelo Aguiar’s effort.  The YCC brought to light some pretty important concerns/priorities that female drivers have (distinct from the concerns/priorities from those of their male counterparts).  Two of the major issues addressed by Volvo’s all-female design squad were blind-spots (women tend to be shorter than men, so the YCC was designed to afford small females greater visibility) and flat-tires (the YCC featured run-flat tires that allow a driver to continue driving even when a tire has been punctured so as to address the fact that women are a bit more vulnerable, in general, and may not feel safe immediately pulling over on the side of the road to call for help or to change the tire).  There’s a pretty informative Wikipedia entry on the YCC, if anyone is interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_YCC.

Flower Petal Alloy Wheels? Non-Aggressive features? The car is an “accessory”? I don’t recall owning anything made by Prada weighing close to a ton. Women love to drive as much as men, maybe even more. I love the style of cars like the Audi Q5 and R8, the way they sound, the feel when the engine revs when the light turns green. I would be hard pressed to even consider driving a car designed for a “woman”. We women like to feel in control of our lives and being behind the wheel of a powerful, aggressive, well-handling, sleek machine can be as close to orgasmic as some of us get.  Not to be crude, but we have come too far to be regulated back to the station wagons of the 70’s.
