Taxi Sister: Senegal

One of the Taxi Sisters in Senegal.

Have you planned a trip to Senegal but have yet to figure out how you’ll get around? No problem, just look for a Taxi Sister.

The project launched in 2007 backed by the government and initiated by the President Abdoulaye Wade. His wife,  Vivian Wade, supports the project as well and handed over the keys to the first 10 female taxi drivers.

According to Wow.gm, a Gambian news source, the women will eventually become the owners of their own taxis.  “The project is touted as a way to pull women out of poverty and introduce them to new occupations in Senegalese society.” The article quoted a male customer as saying, “I hope you drive like a man.” Well, we at DLAW hope you drive like a woman and that you are proud of it!

Women owned and run taxi companies are a trend that Drive Like A Woman has noticed and we will be bringing you more stories like this from around the globe.
