First Mine-Clearing Driver in Laos

Noimany Pialeuxay driving in Laos.

Noimany Pialeuxay is the first driver in Laos to drive for a Mines Advisory Group (MAG) team. MAG works all over the world to clear conflict zones of mines. They have set up 2 all-female teams in Laos.

Pialeuxay’s job is to drive the team as close as possible to the sites in order to clear away mines. It’s not an easy task considering the terrain includes steep mountains and off-road muddy tracks.

For certain her job is a dangerous one, but it’s also a job she loves. Not only does she love helping her country by clearing away the mines she also loves driving. She learned to drive at the early age of 12 by her father who was a driving instructor. She got her driving license when she was 18, which was rather rare in her province.

Pialeuxay had this to say about her job, “MAG was the first organization in Lao PDR to recruit a female driver, and everyone was talking about it. I wanted to apply because I like driving.” DLAW salutes this brave pioneering woman!
